What is Six Sigma?

Six Sigma is a systematic approach to process improvement using analytical and statistical methods. The special feature of Six Sigma compared to other process improvement methods is the mathematical approach.

It is assumed that every business process can be described as a mathematical function.

Based on Far Eastern martial arts, roles within Six Sigma are designated by coloured belts.

This should demonstrate high claims of discipline, skill and precision expressed by all parties involved in a Six Sigma initiative.

The following figure shows the typical roles and skill levels at a glance.

This terminology distinguishes five levels of qualifications in addition to the management

Yellow Belts are the members of the project team. They work on all pending tasks within a project, actively participate in team meetings and contribute with their expertise. Thus, they also need to understand how Six Sigma works, why and how data should be handled and what are the objectives.

Green Belts lead their own projects within their own areas.

Black Belts work as interdisciplinary project managers and coach Green Belts and Yellow Belts. They are able to lead complex projects across departments within the business units.

Master Black Belts are Senior Project Managers that join the business transformation and implementation of the new approach based on their experience and competence. Let them lead large departmental or cross-plant projects in the interests of the company. They initiate targeted sub-projects, help with definition and are available to all other coaches. MBB ‘s support Six Sigma implementation with respect to the reactive optimization (DMAIC, Lean, etc.) but also driving the preventive changes, including, for example, the harmonization of the existing development process with “Design for Six Sigma”. Master Black Belts can perform training for the entire toolbox of Lean Six Sigma and DFSS and drive change in line with the business strategy forward.

Champions are the project owners. Mostly they are managers with appropriate process responsibility who have a vested interest in the sustainable solution to a process problem. They carry responsibility for budget and resources and – in the interest of optimizing – provide sufficient resources. Champions should exert a “pull” – Management function.
